Born and raised in Panama City, Panama and raised in Chicago, Laura received her M.F.A. from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. She is preparing for a solo show in New York at the Yard and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Returning to the figure felt like the only way I could move forward to understand the times we are in. It is the language that can more directly relate issues we face on a daily basis.
Each piece captures an instant of human experience by visually delving into complex memories, emotions, and reactions. The canvases establish a fleeting psychological space in which the figures, colors, shapes and patterns seek recognition, understanding, and relief. Difficult and complex memories are the foundation from which I begin my work. I bring those moments to the surface to exist in a beautiful way.
